Crafts and Wellbeing
Lady Margaret Hall Settlement is offering free
wellbeing and crafts sessions at All Sewn Up. During the sessions
we will cover a range of mental health wellbeing topics while
also trying out various sewing and clothes making activities.
No previous experience of sewing is necessary.
Sessions will
run for 12 weeks and will begin on Friday the 6th of February
and finish on Friday the 24th of April They will run from 5pm
to 7pm
Crafts & Wellbeing
What you will learn
Each session will include a 30 minute introduction to an area of mental health wellbeing. Participants are encouraged to bring their textiles projects and work on them at the same time. During the sessions we will cover a range of mental health wellbeing topics, while also trying out various sewing and clothes making activities. In the first session we will look at what is meant by wellbeing and what self care is. Depending on the interests of the group we will follow with other topics including: Assertiveness; Finding motivation; How do we Change?; Journaling and sketch books and art; Optimism; Friends, family and Community; Managing emotions; Caring for ourselves; How do we know when we need to get help? Tips and techniques for relaxation, Meditation and mindfulness. Affirmations – what the research says; Trauma and triggering - What it is and what it isn’t; Self awareness, values and moral injury; Stages of grief revisited – how the original research was misunderstood; Faith religion and spirituality; Addictions and other harms; Self care - Putting learning into practice.
Entry requirements
This class is suitable for everyone. Students should be able to understand English.
What you will need
You may find it helpful to have a pen and a notebook. Please bring any textile projects you currently enjoy working on This programme is the partner of the textiles homework club and you will be able to work on your project while we are discussing the wellbeing topics This is an open group so it is OK to join once it has started.
After the first session you will know what you need to bring with you which will include fabrics and your own basic sewing kit. List available at first session. Basic Materials are:
- Dressmakers pins
- Seam Unpicker
- Calico Fabric (1-2meters worth)
- Dressmakers chalk markers
- A reel of strong thread (recommended Guitermann) bag.
- Fabric Scissors and Embroidery (small) Scissors
You will have the use of all equipment in the workroom including: large tables, sewing machines, over-lockers, irons and metal rulers.
This course takes place at the same time as the Makers' Homwork Club. You can just drop in and attend both together if you wish.
